C.8 Theological Synthesis

The biblical concept of “spirit” encompasses a wide semantic range. The same Hebrew/Greek word covers all uses; context determines meaning. The Holy Spirit is a distinct divine person with personal attributes. Human spirits are individual to each person, surviving death. Evil spirits are individual demonic beings. The relationship between human spirit and soul supports both trichotomist (spirit as God-ward dimension, soul as self-ward dimension) and dichotomist (spirit and soul as overlapping terms) interpretations.
